Thanks for sharing your question Inez. It’s common that the development/engineering manager role changes when Scrum is introduced. But the individuals playing the role still act as the line managers of (some of) the developers in my experience. I therefore recommend viewing them as stakeholders and managing them accordingly (they are subjects according to the Power-Interest Grid). Invite them to sprint review meeting at least once per quarter as a rule of thumb. This keeps them engaged, and it allows them to see the work of their staff and offer feedback and advice. The waterfall engineering manager role used to decide the tasks that team members are working on and manage them from an HR standpoint. Now that we’re using Scrum, the roles and expectations have changed. Do you have any guidance/ resources to guide this relationship?
